Cartography III
by Hiroko Takeda
In Takeda’s Giant Waffle series, gradations of color and texture merge vertically and horizontally to create depth and expansiveness, shadow and light. “Cartography III,” is a topographical line drawing in warp and weft, with rugged, three-dimensional regions counterpointed by areas of flat weave. In this work, Takeda takes inspiration from charcoal drawing on handmade paper. She mixes textures and shades on an ecru canvas to create varying depths and chiaroscuro effects.
